Congratulations to one of the smartest global publications in print, Monocle, who turns 5 with the publication of their Spring March 2012 issue, #51. The special issue includes a 15 page look back at the first 5 years, including the evolution of the magazine’s design, it’s original name (Project Europa), and eventual expansion into Monocle shops and a new 24 hour radio network. I encourage anyone to listen to the channel, which can be easily streamed via the Monocle homepage. A snapshot of this morning’s content featured a team of brand experts discussing the Odeon movie chain and how to make it better. It’s a great look inside how a creative department at a large ad agency might function. Issue #51 is loaded and the incredibly diverse reportage (a favorite Monocalism) covers everything from Japanese craft beer and Australia’s thriving merino wool industry, to a briefing on the defense departments of countries in the Middle East and Poland. Led by Tyler Brule, we can only hope that the next 5 years are as successful as the first. With a list of contributors taking up a full two pages, the future looks bright.
