A closer look at the August 2011 issue of Details:

Cover: Actor Shia LaBeouf shot by photographer Matthias Vriens-McGrath, styled by Matthew Edelstein, wearing Hugo Boss

Total Ad Pages: 24 + 5 special advertising section pages

Biggest Advertiser: Calvin Klein Collection – 4 pages

Fashion Advertisers: Up front spreads: Dolce Gabbana Light Blue Fragrance, Burberry Brit, Diesel (continuing their Stupid campaign), Coach, Converse & Express towards the middle of book. Single pages: Ermenegildo Zegna, Bottega Veneta

The Rest: Heinekin, Gillette, Ray Ban, Sprint, Appleton Estate Rum, Geico

Best Up Front Editorial: Gucci’s super talented Frida Giannini’s Guide to Florence

Best Fashion: “The Change Up, Ten Ways to Tweak Your Wardrobe For a Look That Sets You Apart This Fall.” (yes a mouthful, and when did it become cool to make copy hard to read?)  A beautiful fashion story shot by Robbie Fimano with the highlight a sharp Billy Reid marled gray wool suit. Oddest choice would be the cropped peacoat that is just a bit too cropped. Maybe it’s the angle.

Best Non Fashion: “The Makers” – A story covering a variety of talented visionaries, including architect Bjarke Ingels – you have to check out the building he designed that is going up at West 57th – breathtaking.

Biggest Annoyance: No prices, on anything. In the days of Gilt and Mr. Porter, publishing a magazine without prices feels antiquated. The “Details Shopping Guide” with subheader: “Where to buy what’s inside” is placed in several different spots in the middle of book and simply re-lists the items and gives either an #800 number or website. Guys today know how to find that on their own.
