LAUNCHING TODAY: THE NEW IPAD

Apple is now bigger than the entire U.S. retail sector; an astonishing achievement. It will be interesting to see if the latest version of the iPad, which launches today, can capture the magic of the last two. The starting price is $499 for a 16GB WiFi-only model, with the most notable upgrades being a new camera, a much talked about 9.7″ Retina display and a faster processor.

TOP SITE: BEST MADE COMPANY

Best Made Company’s website is an example of branding at it’s absolute best. Cleanly laid out, easy to navigate, stellar photography and perfect packaging that all leads to the obvious: higher sell-through. It certainly doesn’t hurt that they sell axes! Sites with flash that immediately launch into a far off journey might look pretty, but more often than not they are annoying. And annoying translates into a mouse-click goodbye. So take a lesson from the boys at Best Made Co and clean it up, par it down and simplify the process. Their still photography in particular is the best I have ever seen on a website. And make sure to always pay special attention to the critical ‘purchasing’ (more…)

RUSTICO IPHONE COVER

This is one of the more beautiful covers for the iPhone you’ll find out there. Rustico, outside of Salt Lake City near the Uinta Mountains is a small leather goods manufacturer that still makes everything by hand. You can pick from a variety of leathers but the smooth bucksin is a favorite, as it adds an outdoor ruggedness to your high-end tech. $20, available at Rustico.

SAMSUNG WONDER EXCHANGE

If you’re looking for advice and intel across a wide variety of categories, check out Samsung’s Wonder Exchange Hub. They’ve brought together 5 bloggers to test out and review their products and I was happy to take part as the style and design expert. This program ran as a print campaign across four Conde Nast titles and was an innovative approach to getting the word out (more…)

SMART TECH: SAMSUNG

Check out this remote that comes with the new Samsung Smart TV. It’s got a full qwerty keyboard that makes navigating the hub easy. For me, it’s great for email, checking in on social media, searching for my favorite movies, etc. There’s really nothing more annoying than an interface that makes you search for each individual letter. On the other side of the remote you’ll find (more…)

SMART TECH: SAMSUNG SERIES 9

I’ve been testing out the new Samsung Series 9 laptop since mid summer and it’s a pretty sweet computer. It packs a punch and is the fastest computer I’ve owned. It excels in the design phase and I usually carry it under my arm and not in a briefcase, it’s that thin and lightweight. For a very well-priced, sharp looking laptop that can go toe-to-toe with the competition (see MacBook Air), it’s well worth a shot. And for your chance to win one, enter here.

LESS AND MORE BY DIETER RAMS

If you appreciate beautiful design then Dieter Rams is someone you should know of. Born in 1832 in Weisbeden, Germany, Rams is widely regarded as one of the preeminent designers of his day. Working as Chief of Design at Braun for 30+ years, many of his designs — coffee makers, calculators, radios, audio/visual equipment, consumer appliances and office products — have found a permanent home at many museums over the world, (more…)

SMART TECH: SAMSUNG SERIES 8 TV

I recently upgraded my flat-screen to the new Samsung Series 8 Smart TV and it’s by far the best picture and sharpest designed TV I’ve owned. The Smart Hub is is a cool feature, allowing you to surf the web, check in on email and Facebook – all while watching the game in split screen. The double-sided remote includes a full qwerty keyboard, making it easy to navigate and write emails.  (more…)

APPLES NEW CAMPUS

Boy has Apple come a long way. The company just released renderings of their new “Apple Campus 2,” scheduled for completion in 2015 in Cupertino, California, an hour south of San Francisco. At the center of the 150 acre compound will be the “Spaceship,” a massive donut shaped building. See those trees and all (more…)

PARK & BOND

It’s been a week since e-commerce site Park & Bond launched and it looks pretty great for a beta site just getting the kinks out. It’s easy to navigate, features a well-edited selection of clothing and accessories and goes the extra mile with how-to’s and personal shopping advice. It’s crazy to think that just a few years ago the online retail world was driven (more…)

URBANEARS FROM STOCKHOLM

These bold headphones are on just about every subway car in NYC this summer. Made by Urbanears from Sweden, the Plattan sounds more like a piece of furniture from Ikea but there’s nothing boring about them. Name aside, these are fantastic headphones with 15 colors to pick from and many great features. Number one would have to be the Zoundplug, a socket (more…)

WWD GETS A MAKEOVER

WWD has a new look and it’s a big improvement. The fonts, layout and overall design are much cleaner and easier to navigate. Content is provided by subscription only, which is unfortunate, but they’ve done a much better job previewing articles with the intent of drawing in potential subscribers. Owned by Fairchild Fashion Media, Women’s Wear Daily was founded in (more…)

EDDIE BAUERS NEW LOOK

Eddie Bauer’s website is looking pretty good these days. They’ve created mini, editorial-like stories that look fresh and are well designed. By putting key items together on one page and showing them in a aspirational setting (like cruising in a beautiful speed boat in the Pacific Northwest) the company is successfully selling a lifestyle, and not just another pair of jeans. This may seem obvious, but unfortunately most menswear retail websites get it wrong. We’ll do a follow up story within the next week on the best menswear retail websites. Who are your favorites?

OLYMPUS TOUGH

According to the press release, the Olympus Tough is the “World’s Fiercest Shockproof, Waterproof, Crushproof, Freezeproof Cameras that Capture Your Life Even Better.” That’s a big promise, as long as it doesn’t bust when you drop it, count us in. A camera made for adventure. $250, available at Amazon.

TIMEX T-SERIES CHRONOGRAPH

Not much to say about this watch except that it’s super sharp and inexpensive. Always a good combo. $120, available at Timex.

BEST IPAD ACCESSORY: DODOCASE

The Dodocase is the best accessory for the iPad, after all what’s more important than keeping it safe? While other cases go hi-tech or over the top, it’s the old-school lined paper detailing on the edges and leather bound look that sets this one apart. Dodocase launched their company on the same day as the iPad in April 2010 and for all of you budding entrepreneurs (more…)
