We’re not just talking about video games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has grossed an astounding $775 million in just 5 days – more than any movie, book, or video game in history. The COD franchise has quickly become one of the most lucrative entertainment properties in history, pulling in 6 billion in revenue since the original Call of Duty debuted back on October 23, 2003 – putting it in the elite stratosphere of Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Based on the success of MW3, we can surely expect more product placement along the lines of the limited edition JEEP MW3 Wrangler featured in the game and available in the real world. Maybe a Dolce & Gabbana suit in the next Grand Theft Auto? Or a 1,000 year old iPhone unearthed in the depths of HALO that holds the answers to saving humanity? If the recent spat of commercials are any indication, blending the real world with gaming is a clear strategy. Just check out this MW3 commercial featuring actors Sam Worthington, Jonah Hill and Dwight Howard virtually battling it out in a destroyed city, or this clever commercial from the new Assassins Creed: Revelations featuring Adrian Peterson, UFC fighter BJ Penn and Derrick Rose all as assassins in their own right.
