The past few days have seen some of the best menswear trade shows take place in New York City, highlighting the upcoming Spring 2013 collections. Perhaps the coolest, Capsule, took over Basketball City, a vast space on the Lower East Side that was a big step up from last season’s location on Washington street. The talented people in charge, led by Christopher Corrado of BPMW, really know how to nail the brand mix by bringing together tried and true labels like Billy Reid and Mark McNairy while adding fresh newcomers like Stutterheim out of Stockholm and Arpenteur out of France. I spent an hour walking the floor yesterday speaking with designers and snapping pictures of my favorite items. Here’s what to look for next Spring:

Basketball City on the LES. Great open layout with 4 aisles:

Two of the best eyes in the business, Tyler Thoreson & Jared Flint of Gilt, in the lounge:

A colorful assortment of bags from Topo Designs:

The invigorating pine scents from High Sierra:

The outdoor terrace with dramatic Brooklyn Bridge backdrop (and scorching heat):

One of my favorite brands, and fellow Mainers, Eastland:

Penfield capturing the camouflage trend. The tighter pattern makes them more vintage:

An assortment of well edited, well placed books:

Had never heard of this brand before & was impressed. Arpenteur out of France. Really clean and simple well made clothing:

Great branding:

An illustration of Brittany. When I mentioned it looked like Maine, the house style was pointed out as being classic French:

One of my all time favorites, Danner boots out of Portland, Oregon:

Perhaps my favorite item of the entire show. A stunning gold and chocolate brown combination:

This was smart. Best Made Company built this tent and sold items at retail out of it. One of the sharpest brands out there:

The simple chic beauty of Riviera Club, becoming an essential brand in the menswear scene. Led by founder Derek Buse:

A refreshing color palette for spring 2013:

Cannot ignore New Balance, although they wouldn’t let me shoot the best style:

An interesting set up, part of the show is a retail environment where items are sold, from benches to camping gear:

And of course the ubiquitous, store-ready mounted white billy goat and water buffalo:

My favorite boots I own are from the Timberland Abington collection so I was pleased to see what’s next:

The lack of over branding and big logo sets them apart:

And my favorite newcomer, these rain coats/outerwear pieces were stunningly simple and had a nice heft to them:
