If you appreciate beautiful design then Dieter Rams is someone you should know of. Born in 1832 in Weisbeden, Germany, Rams is widely regarded as one of the preeminent designers of his day. Working as Chief of Design at Braun for 30+ years, many of his designs — coffee makers, calculators, radios, audio/visual equipment, consumer appliances and office products — have found a permanent home at many museums over the world, including the MoMa in New York. Rams has explained his design approach in the phrase “Weniger, aber besser” which translates as “Less, but better.” He currently has a major retrospective of his work on tour around the world and if you’re lucky enough to live in San Francisco, check out the show at the SF MoMa, through February 20, 2012.
