Think I like this remix by Fred Falke better than the original.

Here’s a good one for the dance floor, “Love Rehab” by Chaim.

THE HISTORY OF THE TUXEDO

As New Year’s Eve approaches, it’s a good idea to know the history of the Tuxedo, even if your plans are low key. Remarkably, it was devised as a way to dress-down in England in the 1800′s for the stuffy social set needing a break from wearing coat tails and top hats. Once considering semi-formal, the tuxedo now often represents the highest level of dress for a gentleman, particularly in America. Here is the story: in 1860, Henry Poole & Co. (Savile Row’s founders), created a short smoking jacket that was spotted and worn by New York millionaire James Potter while on a trip to England. Potter then (more…)

LA MER BY JULIO EGLESIAS

A memorable song in its own right, “La Mer” sung live by Julio Iglesias in 1976, should be receiving a lot of attention as it’s the final song in a key sequence of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It was chosen by the Director Tomas Alfredson and his team because it was something they thought lead spy George Smiley would listen to. A great play for your New Years party.

BREAKOUT: SVETLANA KHODCHENKOVA

In an otherwise drab and dreary cast of moody British spies clad in heavy tweed, Russian actress Svetlana Khodchenkova shines in the terrific Tinker Tailor Solider Spy. This film will undoubtedly be remembered as her breakout role, and the few scenes she is in leave us wanting much more. There is a slow and steady elegance to the film, and the sometimes laborious pacing shuns the too-often distracting techniques of modern thrillers. Once you settle in, the story unfolds remarkably and (more…)

A LEADING VOICE: JAY FIELDEN

When it comes to expanding your knowledge of what it is to be stylish – and that means more than just looking the part, but actually living it – Jay Fielden is at the very top of the list – someone to read, emulate and follow. I had the pleasure of meeting Jay many years ago in Milan while he was Editor-in-Chief of Men’s Vogue, and I the Director of Men’s PR for Prada tasked with coming up with three new front row seats for his team. Of course this was not a problem, anything with Vogue attached to it is well placed at the table. Following the magazines retirement in 2008 there was a quiet period, but fortunately for those who enjoy living well, or at the least like to daydream, Mr. Fielden returned this past summer to a perfectly suited position: the lofty stewardship of Town & Country. Since he took over, the magazine (more…)

KNOW THIS BRAND: HELLY HANSEN

Many sportswear brands like to play up their close relationship with the great outdoors, but most of them will always be a fashion brand first, outdoor apparel company a distant second. Helly Hansen founded in 1877 and based in Oslo, Norway is the exact opposite, with clothing and gear designed around specific rigorous action sports, with function always trumping style and form. You can spot their foul-weather fishing gear on Deadliest Catch and in films, The Perfect Storm. So if you wake up one day and decide you’d like to sign up as a rookie crab fisherman on the Cornelia Marie, sail around to world in a dangerous yachting race, or go heli-skiing in British Columbia, this is the brand for you. Our favorite item: (more…)
