STYLING: BRIAN SMITH

BrianSmith

If you’re a fan of the SYFY network, you will recognize Brian as 1st Lt. Matthew Scott from the series Stargate Universe, the networks breadwinner.

Brian needed items for an upcoming press trip to London.  Knowing that he didn’t have an extensive wardrobe, we focused on a few basics.  We met at one of my favorite stores in New York, Theory, on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking district.  I love Theory because the clothing always has an impeccable, precise cut, isn’t over-the-top and is moderately priced.  (Sports jackets are $495 for example.)

Brian looked great in both a navy and light gray suit but we decided on the light gray because it looked less formal and had a slight texture to it, almost a sheen that gave it a Rat Pack appeal.

Theory’s suit jackets are cut to work on their own, so you can wear them as a sports jacket with jeans for less formal occasions, or as a suit for the office.  We found a beautiful pale pink dress shirt and charcoal thin gray tie that brought it all together and looked fresh.  Notice the proportion of the dress shirt collar, the width of the tie and how they work together with the thinner and more modern looking lapel of the jacket.

Since Brian was heading to London, he needed a sharp layered look, a bit preppy for day or night.  We found a navy cashmere lightweight v-neck sweater for added style, and warmth.  In order for it to look less structured, we left the top button of the dress shirt unbuttoned, let the tie hang a little loose and turned the collar up on the jacket in anticipation of London’s cold and damp winter weather.

A good shopping trip.  You can see Brian needed a little help : ) Picture taken by the fabulous Alexa Geovanos of Theory who caught the reflection in the window of one of New York’s best restaurants, Pastis.
